Seafarer Mama

My name is Karen Szklany Gault and I love stories about the sea and seafaring life. I also love music, walking labyrinths, sailing, writing, creating multimedia collages, cohousing, the art of Vincent van Gogh, the music of Mozart, the writing of JRR Tolkein and C.S. Lewis, and home-schooling my daughter. My family ties are rooted in the historic town of Sleepy Hollow, NY. My B.A. is in Psychology from Marist College (1986) and my M.Ed. in Elementary Education is from the University of Massachusetts at Boston (1996). I spent two years in California between those two degrees, completing graduate courses in Counseling Psychology and undergraduate courses in Music Performance, and participating in the Peace Club at Chapman Univesity.

Woven into my education was my final year of undergraduate studies spent in Galway, Ireland. While there, I dove into pints of Guinness and completed my internship as the Assistant to the Head Psychologist at Galway Regional Hospital. One of the highlights of my year was the three weeks I spent in the Spring of 1986 traversing by train across the European continent, including a brief stop in London. Those travels happily reached as far as Athens, Greece. While a graduate student in California, I spent a week of cross-cultural activities with the students of the Universidad de Ciudad de Mexico. It was a wonderful week of climbing pyramids, attending fiestas, and conversing with the Mexican students in their native language. Since then, the farthest I have traveled has been spending a lovely June (1994) weekend in Montreal.

In June 2009, my first poetry chapbook was published, titled Running with the Wings of the Beast. From that, I was the feature poet at the Stone Soup Poetry open mic one Monday night.

From November of 2009 until July of 2010, I wrote a book titled The Complete Guide to Growing Your Own Fruits and Berries: Everything You Need to Know Explained Simply, which can be purchased on my web site, or through my Amazon capsule recommendations in a few of my hubs.
